“The only sense that is common in the long run, is the sense of change-and we all instinctively avoid it.”
~ E. B. White (1899 – 1985)

We’re creatures of habit. We want to be comfortable in our surroundings, competent in all we do, and in control of most things. So what’s wrong with that? Well, since change is always happening it might be wiser to find a healthy balance between the route we know and that road less travelled.

In the week ahead practice looking at the familiar with an eye to doing it differently.

I call it ‘getting off default’; those actions we habitually take without considering whether better options are available. Look at how you structure your day, your meetings, how you solve problems. Can you be more efficient, more focused or different? Consider new approaches to your sleep, your exercise, even what you eat. How can you shake things up? In other words, try not to be so routine around your routine. Explore uncommon outcomes and embrace inevitable change.
