VIDEO: My week one Energy Experiment musings (and some sound advice for you)

Well, week one is done… sort of…and it’s been a week of highs and lows.

On Day 1 Ewan and I started off on The Experiment with moderate enthusiasm and figured that even though the workout was surprisingly tough, we were on to a good thing.

On Day 2; Wednesday morning we were already looking for ways around our morning routine, but the waffling was brief and once we got to it the workout wasn’t all that bad.

Yesterday morning neither Ewan or I wanted to get out of bed to do Day 3 of the plan. PERIOD. We were sore, tired, and so close to skipping that I had to muster up all of my motivational mastery to make it happen. But we dragged our butts through the workout (yes we struggled through a mere 16 minutes) and I was glad when that one was over.

Did I think all this would be easier for me – fitness expert, health enthusiast, generally fit kind of gal? Yeah, I guess I did, but here’s what I’m learning.

This 2012 Energy Experiment is waking me up to a few things that I have been overlooking or had simply forgotten with regards to starting a new (regimented) fitness program.

Holy s%&#, listen to your body. Last night Ewan and I had a discussion around the fatigue and soreness we were feeling from The Experiment. I was reminded that this program is new and challenging for both of us and we’re not immune to delayed onset muscle soreness just because we’re fit. It’s completely NORMAL.

So last night we made the decision to SKIP Friday morning’s session, or rather delay it until Saturday morning (don’t judge). This way we could sleep in, give our muscles a bit more recovery time, and keep the fun factor in the experiment. Fun=continuity and continuity=better health, happiness and energy.

We chose to swim lengths Friday afternoon instead, and based on how I’m feeling right now at 4:00 pm our decision was a good one.

Week one is done.

If you want to join me in week 2 (and I hope you do) it’s not too late. Read blog #1 on the Energy Experiment where I share my plans and a copy of my workout, then email me here to let me know you want to be alerted to new blog posts. When you get the alerts, read the blog, comment if you like, and share your own successes and challenges with me.

Oh, and be sure to watch the video of my first Energy Experiment workout from Tuesday below (it’s hilarious)

Next week is a new week. Take what you learned this week, adapt, and keep moving. That’s what we did and I for one am feeling good!

Here’s to a happier, healthier and more energetic 2012!
